Of course, I don't feed them, so my chances are pretty slim. :)

It is always a thrill for me if I do get lucky and see one.Diana LaMarrehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11324428666401187803noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7108519226249786196.post-72954620669318986122011-02-24T12:46:22.814-06:002011-02-24T12:46:22.814-06:00You captured some great pictures of those beauties...You captured some great pictures of those beauties. I think I've said before, how I'm intrigued by it. By wondering if some "kind-of-balls-of-stuff-in-trees" are actually mistletoe?

Or just old nests of some big birds, way up in big old trees.

I know I have to move myself to get out with my binoculers and check 'em out!!! Before the leaf buds start popping out. Then, no chance to find out, for another while.Auntie sezzzzzz...https://www.blogger.com/profile/16170232476926222740noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7108519226249786196.post-21218644600029344422011-02-24T08:43:09.624-06:002011-02-24T08:43:09.624-06:00Speaking of mistletoe....when I was a boy, growing...Speaking of mistletoe....when I was a boy, growing up in the outskirts of Houston, several of my friends and I would get together at Christmas and collect mistletoe to sell. The methodology was to climb the trees that were sporting the mistletoe and gather it that way. I understand that today, collection is easier---just stay on the ground and shoot it out of the tree with a .22. Thanks for the memories!Clinthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12417401195683808500noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7108519226249786196.post-53902305924820787492011-02-24T08:31:10.735-06:002011-02-24T08:31:10.735-06:00Pretty cardinals; they are my favorite. You did well! Love the mistletoe. We use the "must say something nice" rule when tension builds. It has helped us to quickly overcome any issue. Hugs. Award winning!

I used to like mistletoe until I read about it in a Character Sketch book from IBLP (Bill Gothard). It is a parasite that can be harmful to the trees. There are 900 different varieties but only 2 are commonly found in the US. It is the state flower of Oklahoma....due in part because it was the only available green plant the early settlers could use to decorate the graves of loved ones during the winter.
The berries provide food for wintering birds like the Cedar waxwings. I enjoy seeing it in the trees in the winter....I just don't want to see it in MY trees!!Lindahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09623820316056914224noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7108519226249786196.post-48483242782060207152011-02-23T22:27:59.255-06:002011-02-23T22:27:59.255-06:00Cute! And yes, I take most of my bird shots thru the window because most of them are too shy with me standing there - except for those pine siskins and some chickadees. I think they'd land on me if I stood still long enough...TexWisGirlhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15510099344729038541noreply@blogger.com
